While Nantwich Town and Spennymoor Town cancelled each other out, the Spartans attracted a gate of 809 to the Marston Road home of Stafford Rangers and took home the points thanks to a Sean Reid goal in the 56th minute.
Fourth-placed Spennymoor, who have two games in hand, entertained second-placed Nantwich at the Brewery Field and it ended as a good result for the leaders in a 1-1 draw.
A crowd of 602 saw Shane Henry give the Moors the boost of an early seventh minute lead before the Dabbers earned a share of the spoils when Curtis Jones levelled in the 64th minute.
Third-placed Stourbridge also dropped two points after also drawing 1-1 at Silverlands against another top five contender, Buxton.
The home side were in front after less than four minutes through Niall Doran. Luke Benbow equalised a minute before the break – and neither side were able to find a winner in front of a gate of 504.
Warrington Town moved into fifth place and level on points with Spennymoor after winning 2-0 at Kirkby Road against mid-table Barwell, a Craig Stanley own goal giving the Wire a 25th minute lead that Scott Bakkor eventually doubled 10 minutes from time.
Whitby Town dropped out of the top five after being held to a 1-1 draw at the Turnbull Ground by Coalville Town.
It looked as though the Ravens were going back to Leicestershire with all three points when Rory Coleman broke the deadlock with an 80th minute penalty. But a crucial equaliser in stoppage time from Kieran Weledji could prove to be very important for the Seasiders.
Matlock Town and Grantham Town are still very much in top five contention with the results above them, having both won on Saturday.
The Gladiators are three points adrift of Warrington after a 2-1 home win over Rushall Olympic, thanks to goals from Niall McManus after 65 minutes and Dwayne Wiley four minutes from time – all after Danico Johnson had given the Pics a 24th minute lead.
The Gingerbreads are a point further back after inflicted a 2-0 defeat on third-bottom Frickley Athletic at Westfield Lane, Danny Meadows after 17 minutes and Luke Shaw six minutes later the visiting marksmen.
Corby Town are still deep in trouble, level on points with fourth-bottom Sutton Coldfield Town, after losing 3-1 at Hurst Cross to Ashton United.
The Steelmen were a goal down at half-time as Ashton opened the scoring on 36 minutes thanks to a fine strike from Ryan Crowther from the edge of the box. However, the Steelmen drew level on 64 minutes when Ben Milnes fired home.
Corby hit the post as they searched for a winner but they were undone with four minutes to go when the defence failed to clear and Crowther grabbed his second of the game. And the Steelmen’s misery was compounded in stoppage time when Matty Chadwick added a third.
Elsewhere, Mickleover Sports hold a five-point cushion on the bottom four, but were beaten 1-0 at home by Hednesford Town on Saturday – a 54th minute Joe Ballinger effort proving enough.
Halesowen Town are a point better off than Sports after beating already-relegated Skelmersdale United 1-0 at The Grove, thanks to a 55th minute Bradley Lewis goal.
