Shirt tribute until the season ends

EVO-STIK Northern Premier League Brighouse Town will pay a special tribute to Daniel Wilkinson every time they run out to warm up for action until the end of the season.

Before playing their first game against Hyde United on Monday night since his tragic death seven days earlier, the club unveiled a new warm-up kit, pictured, to remember the Shaw Lane defender who collapsed on the pitch at St Giles Road during an Integro League Cup clash and later passed away.

An underlying heart condition - Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (AVRC) - was later blamed for death of the 24-year-old and Brighouse also held a bucket collection to add to the £5,000 that has already been raised for The Daniel Wilkinson Foundation, set up in his name to raise £50,000 to screen more young players for heart problems and buy life-saving defibrillators for clubs.

Fans at the 2-0 win for Brighouse also held a minute's applause for the former Hull City, North Ferriby United, Scarborough Athletic, Harrogate Town, Goole Town and Rushall Olympic player who passed away despite the best efforts of medics from both clubs and the emergency services to treat him using Town's defibrillator and administering CPR.

In a message on Twitter before kick-off, Shaw Lane thanked Brighouse for their continuing support which came two days after the club's players and officials attended their own return on Saturday when they hosted Romulus in their first game at Shaw Lane since last Monday night's tragedy.

They tweeted: "Thinking of our friends @brighousetownfc tonight as they host @hydeunited. Thank you for your wonderful support this week."

A minute's silence was observed by the EVO-STIK NPL's clubs at all fixtures on Saturday. In front of Daniel's parents at at Shaw Lane, who'd asked the club to play and celebrate his life, officials renamed a stand in Daniel's honour and officially retired his shirt before kicking off against Romulus.

Clubs from the North West Counties Football League to the Premier League also remembered the player over the weekend with supporters at Hull City versus Arsenal asked to hold a minute's applause for the former Tigers player, the tribute at the KCOM stadium later featuring on Saturday's Match of the Day.
