Coupled with defeat for overnight leaders Blyth Spartans at rejuvenated Frickley Athletic, Buxton moved to the top of the table after ending Ashton United`s unbeaten start to the season.
Ashton took a 19th minute lead through Jack Dorney, only for Daniel Burns to equalise with 19 minutes remaining. But a cruel blow to the hosts a few minutes from the end turned the game in the Bucks` favour.
Having already used all their permitted substitutes Rhys Nevins, who had only been on the pitch a few minutes himself having come off the bench to replace new signing Jack Dyche, had to be stretchered off, leaving the home side to play out the remaining time with ten-men.
And Buxton took full advantage, grabbing the lead as stoppage time ticked in through Bradley Grayson before adding a third from Brad Abbott to ensure Ashton`s eight-game unbeaten run ended.
Blyth suffered a second successive defeat after bowing out of the Emirates FA Cup to Northern League side Morpeth Town last weekend.
And it was a second successive win for Frickley under recently-appointed manager Lee Morris. The deciding goal didn`t arrive until four minutes from time when Rhys Meynell headed in a free-kick.
Whitby Town moved into third place and maintained their unbeaten record after another 1-0 outcome at the Brewery Field against Spennymoor Town.
And the Seasiders left it even later than Frickley to net the only goal of the game, Dale Hopson grabbing a 90th minute winner.
In contrast, Sutton Coldfield Town are still searching for a first league win after being held to a 1-1 Coles Lane draw by Stafford Rangers.
Ryan Edmunds gave the Royals a 13th minute lead. And it wasn`t until 18 minutes from time that Kyle Perry managed to pull Rangers level.
Mickleover Sports moved up to seventh place, leap-frogging Warrington Town, after a 1-0 win at home, courtesy of Andy Dales` 55th minute effort.
Matlock Town are now ninth after a comfortable 4-1 win at Owen Street against Coalville Town.
Marc Newsham and Michael Williams both bagged braces for the Gladiators – Newsham in the eighth and 33rd minutes and ex-Ilkeston FC man Williams in the 50th and 74th minutes, with Nathan Watson`s 76th minute reply just being a consolation for the Ravens.
Grant Ryan gave Grantham Town the lead on the hour-mark at Kirkby Road against Barwell. But the hosts made it four draws from eight matches when Liam Kay equalised 15 minutes from time.
The game between Ilkeston FC and Hednesford Town was abandoned with only five minutes to go at the New Manor Ground due to floodlight failure with the Pitmen leading 2-1 at the time.
