Sutton in town for Christmas

Former Norwich City, Blackburn Rovers, Chelsea, Celtic, Birmingham City and Aston Villa striker Chris Sutton is heading to EVO-STIK League Leek Town to help fans warm up for Christmas.

Now 44, the television and radio pundit, pictured, was unveiled on Monday as the guest speaker at the EVO-STIK League South club's next Sportsmen's Evening at Harrison Park on Friday 1 December.

A Blues spokesman said: "Never one to shy away from controversy, the evening should be full of interesting tales from the world of the top-flight game. As usual, there will be full support from a comedian and a Christmas-themed meal as well. Full details including ticket prices will follow, but the evening is due to take place on Friday 1st December, so spread the word and keep that date free for now."

The highlight of the Match of the Day and Sky Sports pundit's career came in 1994 when he became the most expensive player in British football following his switch from Norwich to Blackburn to form the feared 'SAS' partnership with England striker Alan Shearer.

The pair scored 49 goals between them the following season as Blackburn famously lifted the Premier League trophy. At Glasgow Celtic, Sutton formed an even deadlier partnership with Sweden's Henrik Larsson, going on to win seven major trophies and reach a UEFA Cup Final.
