There were two important matches involving both ends of the table in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leaders Halesowen Town maintained their two-point cushion at the top after edging out Sheffield FC by the odd goal in five at the BT Local Business Stadium.

The Yeltz took an 18th minute lead when top scorer Ben Haseley beat Sheffield keeper Rob Poulter from close range. Although Halesowen dominated the rest of the half, they were unable to add to their tally and paid the price when Sheffield pulled back on level terms three minutes into the second half through Mark Fereday.

Haseley put the Yeltz in front again on 58 minutes before Sheffield dragged themselves level again in the 73rd minute when Brendan Kelly could only poke the ball into his own net from a cross. However, Halesowen re-took the lead once again just six minutes later when Curtis Tilt headed home a Tom Tonks cross to win the game.

The victory proved even more important as second-placed Coalville Town eased to a 3-0 win at the Oval against second-bottom Bedworth United.

Callum Woodward headed over before collecting the ball on the left in the 19th minute and playing in a low cross that eluded everyone before creeping in off the far post.

The home side still matched their high-flying opponents but found themselves further behind ten minutes after the break when former United defender Cameron Stuart curled a free-kick round the defensive wall and past Wren.

With United pushing forward they were caught out again four minutes from time when Anthony Carney ended a breakaway by rolling in a third as United were caught short at the back.

The result leaves Coalville two points behind Halesowen, but they have a game in hand, while Bedworth remain four points in front of bottom-markers Kidsgrove Athletic, who have a game extra to play.
