Tuesday's First Division South review

By David Watters

Five of the top six in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South were in action on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Leaders Shaw Lane AFC suffered a first league defeat since September 27th – a run of 15 matches – as they lost 3-2 at Wincham Park to third-placed Witton Albion, who are now six points behind them with a game in hand.

A crowd of 328 saw Bradley Bauress give Albion an early 5th minute lead that Steven Tames added to after 36 minutes. And when Tames made it 3-0 just before half-time, it looked all over bar the shouting.

But sometimes those sorts of leads can be dangerous and Shaw Lane weren`t about to give up their proud run without a fight, pulling two back from Gary Burnett after 59 minutes and Ryan Qualter three minutes later.

That result was good news for second-placed Spalding United after they won 2-1 at fifth-placed AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

A crowd of 410 saw the Tulips come back from being a goal down immediately after half-time when Liam Dolman`s free-kick put Diamonds in front.

And it was looking even bleaker for the visitors when they had Neal Spafford sent-off for a second bookable offence four minutes later. But the dismissal seemed to galvanise Spalding and a Cenk Acar penalty on 66 minute pulled them back on level terms before Leon Mettam won it for the Tulips with 17 minutes remaining.

Sixth-placed Basford United could have moved to within a point of Diamonds had they won at Ashby Avenue against Lincoln United but the Nottinghamshire side had to make do with a point from a goalless encounter.

Tuesday`s other game saw Chasetown move level on points with ninth-placed Bedworth United with a 3-1 win at the Oval.

Ryan Wynter gave the Scholars the boost of an early second minute lead. Elliott Parrott equalised seven minutes before the break but Wynter restored the visitors lead 10 minutes after it and Jamie Sheldon made sure with a third on the hour mark.
