Tuesday's North Division review

By David Watters

South Shields made it back-to-back promotions as they hammered a Brighouse Town side who had won their opening game of the EVO-STIKK League North season on Saturday 5-0 on Tuesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

A terrific crowd of 1,776 at Mariners Park, pictured, saw Shields lead 2-0 at the break with goals from Carl Finnigan after 15 minutes and Barrie Smith nine minutes before the interval.

Michael Richardson added a third nine minutes after the break and Matty Pattison on 71 minutes and Jamie Holmes four minutes later made it a nap hand for last season's Northern League and Buildbase FA Vase winners.

They join Bamber Bridge and Glossop North End as the only sides to have won both their opening matches.

Brig`s good start was bad news for Goole AFC, who lost 6-1 at Irongate to go with their 3-0 opening day defeat at home to Glossop.

It was 3-0 at the interval with goals from Macauley Wilson, Matt Dudley and Ali Waddecar. Lewis Dennison reduced the deficit 11 minutes into the second period but Matt Lawlor restored Brig`s three-goal advantage just past the hour-mark. Then, two more in the final 10 minutes from Brad Carsley and Daniel Mooney sealed a very comfortable win for the home side.

Glossop followed up that win at Goole by beating Clitheroe, who had won last weekend, 2-0 at home with goals from Dale Johnson just before the break and a Courtney Meppen-Walter penalty in the 58th minute.

In contrast, Goole are joined by Ossett Albion, Radcliffe Borough and Prescot Cables in being yet to record a point.

Worrying times for Albion, who have now conceded 10 goals in two games after a 7-1 thrashing at a Tadcaster Albion outfit still smarting from an opening day defeat at Ramsbottom United.

Aiden Savory netted a first half hat-trick at Ings Lane which put the Brewers in complete control with only half-an-hour on the clock. Josh Greening chipped in with a brace either side of the break before Danny Frost and Tom Corner also got it on the act in the eye-catching rout. Sam Robinson netted a 72nd minute consolation for the visitors.

Radcliffe were beaten 3-1 at neighbouring Droylsden, who had lost their opener.

But Ciaran Kilheeney after 32 minutes, Liam Caddick five minutes after the break and Dominic Smith in stoppage time were enough for the Bloods – Kurt Sherlock replying.

Hyde United shared the spoils on the opening day but earned all three at Ewen Fields against Prescot, thanks to a Tom Pratt brace in the 19th and 66th minutes – Lloyd Dean pulling one back late on.

There were first wins for Scarborough Athletic, and first points for Skelmersdale United, Trafford and Colne.

Scarborough beat an Ossett Town side who had won away on the opening day with goals from Jimmy Beadle after 45 minutes and Billy Logan on 64 minutes – all after Martin Pembleton had given the hosts a 6th minute lead.

Skem and Trafford got off the mark after sharing the spoils at Stormy Corner where Paul Linwood`s 15th minute opener for the visitors was levelled by Andy Owens three minutes into the second half.

Colne, beaten at home by new boys Atherton Collieries last weekend, also drew 1-1 at Seel Park against a Mossley AFC outfit who had won their opener.

Adam Latham put the Lilywhites in front after 25 minutes but former Mossley favourite Mike Fish equalised 11 minutes after the break.

Tuesday`s other game between Colwyn Bay and Ramsbottom – who had both won on the opening day – ended 2-2 at Llanellian Road.

Jerome Wright gave Rammy an early third minute lead that Will Booth cancelled out after 16 minutes. Greg Daniels restored the visitors' lead from the spot on 32 minutes but Astley Mulholland ensured the spoils were shared with a leveller on the hour-mark.
