Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Warrington Town missed the opportunity to reclaim top spot in the EVO-STIK League Premier on Tuesday night when they were beaten 2-0 at Hurst Cross by Ashton United, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Sixth-placed Ashton completed the 'double' over the Wire, courtesy of goals from Nicky Platt after 14 minutes and then loanee Jack Dyche 13 minutes from time.

Warrington dropped to third spot and were overtaken by Altrincham, who drew 1-1 at the Turnbull Ground against Whitby Town, who had lost their previous two matches.

Alty had taken a ninth minute lead through Jamie Poole but after the break Whitby equalised when Tom Hannigan's reckless challenge on Steve Snaith conceded a spot-kick just shy of the hour-mark. Dave Carson duly converted the resulting penalty to earn the Seasiders a point.

Marine AFC moved above Stalybridge Celtic into 19th spot after ending the visitors' four-game unbeaten run at the Marine Travel Arena.

In front of a crowd of 385, James Edgar gave the hosts a 24th minute lead that Danny Mitchley doubled a minute before the break. Liam Dickinson pulled Celtic back into the game eight minutes after the restart but a Dominic Marie effort six minutes from time sealed the Mariners victory.

A goal from Prince Haywood after just nine minutes eventually proved enough for Witton Albion against Workington AFC at Wincham Park, while Grantham Town returned to winning ways and seventh spot after a 3-1 success at Owen Street against Coalville Town.

Danny Meadows gave the Gingerbreads the lead on the half-hour mark. Lee Shaw added a second for the visitors six minutes after the break, with Luke Shaw virtually making sure of the points with a third in the 63rd minute, rendering Dan Creaney`s 76th reply from the spot as just a consolation for the Ravens.

For the second successive game, Halesowen Town earned local bragging rights after beating Hednesford Town 2-1 at The Grove.

Last Saturday saw the Yeltz win at Stourbridge and they were given a helping hand, or foot in this case, by a James Mutton own goal just past the half-hour mark.

Five minutes later, Daniel Udoh doubled the home side`s lead. Jordan Graham reduced the arrears after 63 minutes, but the Pitmen weren`t able to find a leveller.

The evening`s two other games both ended in draws with Andre Landell giving bottom-markers Rushall Olympic a 28th minute lead at Dales Lane in a 1-1 draw with Barwell.

However, Kyle Perry rescued a point for the Canaries with an 82nd minute penalty, although the point did take the Pics above Sutton Coldfield Town on goal difference.

And in front of 417 at Marston Road, hosts Stafford Rangers took an 11th minute lead through Richard Gregory against Mickleover Sports, whose Alex Morris equalised 11 minutes later in another 1-1 draw.
