Tuesday's Premier Division action review

By David Watters

Shaw Lane AFC moved into second place in the EVO-STIK League Premier table on Tuesday night following a 2-1 win at fourth-bottom Marine AFC and Grantham Town being held to a 1-1 draw at Barwell, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Former Altrincham favourite Damian Reeves gave the Ducks a 25th lead that they held until just past the hour-mark when David Norris extended their advantage after great work by Alex Byrne. John McGrath reduced the deficit eight minutes later, but the visitors held firm.

Grantham's superior goal difference would have taken them second had they managed a win at Kirkby Road but they were denied victory when Barwell found an 80th minute equaliser.

The Gingerbreads dominated the opening half-hour without managing to make the breakthrough. Within a matter of a few minutes, Barwell hit the crossbar no less than three times!

The Gingerbreads eventually went ahead nine minutes into the second half when keeper Kieran Preston`s free-kick was headed down by Curtis Burrows for Jordan Hempenstall to volley home. Barwell forced into a number of impressive saves before they pulled level 11 minutes from time when a shot from Lee Hildreth crept in at the near post.

Farsley Celtic could have moved into fourth spot had they beaten lower mid-table Matlock Town at Throstle Nest.

But they failed to build on last Saturday’s 3-0 win over Buxton, losing 2-1. Star of the show for the Gladiators was Burnley loanee Harry Limb, who bagged a brace in the 22nd and 52nd minutes, sandwiched by a Lewis Turner equaliser right on half-time, to help them to their first win of 2018.

Ashton United did manage to slip into fourth spot after they edged out Stourbridge at Hurst Cross.

The only goal of the game came after 15 minutes when Glassboys defender Paul McCone was adjudged to have brought down Nic Evangelinos in the box, and Aaron Chalmers stepped up to fire his spot-kick high into the back of the net.

A third successive win for Nantwich Town at the Giant Axe took them level on points with Lancaster City in 15th spot.

Sean Cooke, who bagged a brace in the reverse fixture last weekend, did it again in the away game, giving the Dabbers a 12th minute lead and then restoring their advantage five minutes into the second half after Mamadou Djabi had equalised seven minutes before the break.

Tuesday`s other game saw Coalville Town and Stafford Rangers share a goalless draw at Owen Street.
