There were a couple of matches in the Evo-Stik NPL First Division South on Wednesday night with Northwich Victoria's win over Romulus taking them to seventh in the table, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

Northwich won their second successive game at their temporary Marston Road base with a performance that may start to attract more than the 85 who bothered to travel to Stafford for this match.

Vics took the lead after 35 minutes when Matty Walwyn fired home from fully 25 yards. Andy Mutch's side went two-up with a minute to go to half-time, with former AFC Fylde striker Walwyn again the scorer, this time with his head from a lot closer in.

The Roms gave themselves hope of a comeback when they reduced the arrears just three minutes after the break with a looping header from Liam Francis.

But Vics made sure of victory four minutes later when full-back Joe Guest fired home a fine effort after a good move.

The other game on Wednesday night was a Nottinghamshire derby between Carlton Town and Hucknall Town at the Bill Stokeld Stadium.

Carlton controlled most of the game but struggled to create clear opportunities against a Yellows defence featuring several ex-Carlton players.

Alistair Asher went closest in the first half with a cross that almost dipped under the bar, while Martin Kearney made one save of note, diving low to save a close range header. The second period was more of the same as Carlton pressed forward throughout.

Sam MacVicar went closest when he struck the bar and just when it looked as if the visitors would hold out for a point, Joe Naylor fired home from the edge of the box six minutes from time when Hucknall failed to deal with a MacVicar cross.

The win, Carlton's first at home in the league this season, sees the Millers move up to eleventh place in the table.
