Carlton Town returned to winning ways with a 5-2 win over Brigg Town in the only game in the Evo-Stik Northern Premier League First Division South on Wednesday night, writes Pitchero's Steve Whitney.

The game was effectively over by half-time as Carlton took a 4-0 first half advantage.

Luke Smithson opened the scoring on 21 minutes when he fired into the top corner from 25 yards and Matt Varley doubled the lead from the penalty spot eight minutes later after Nick Hall was fouled by Alex Flett.

Reuben Wiggins-Thomas made it three on 41 minutes after Joe Naylor's header had hit the bar and new signing Markell Bailey added the fourth on the stroke of half-time when his shot from the edge of the box squirmed through the arms of keeper Miles Fenty.

Brigg improved after the break and captain Ryan Paczkowski pulled one back from the penalty spot on 67 minutes after Daniel Fletcher had brought down substitute Josh Davies. But any hopes of a Zebras fight back were extinguished just two minutes later when Smithson scored his second from close range after Fenty could only parry Hall's shot.

The Millers had opportunities to add to their lead and only some fine blocks by Fenty from Wiggins-Thomas and Sam MacVicar in particular, prevented them from doing so.

At the other end Brigg scored an 87th minute second when James Walker's free-kick was deflected past his own keeper by Rob Darkin.
