Premier Division Preview: 6 pointer title clash

By James Gordon

It’s third versus second in a fixture which could change the outlook of the title race in the Northern Premier League Premier Division this weekend.

Unfortunately, spectators were denied a thrilling game of football last weekend, as poor weather conditions halted the battle between South Shields and Matlock.

Luckily, South Shields now face-off against their other closest rivals in Buxton, in what could be a classic six pointer as both teams aim to topple Matlock at the top of the table.

Speaking ahead of the clash, Buxton forward Diego De Girolamo believes that his side can take all three points from the Mariners after bouncing back from a poor run of form with a win against Hyde United last weekend: “The win on Saturday against Hyde was massive for the lads.

"Obviously, the confidence in the team did dip a little bit with the run of games we’ve had, the losses, but it definitely seems to be back to normal now.

"I know the lads are really looking forward to the game on Saturday and hopefully it’s one we can take three points from."

The Bucks came away with a 1-0 victory in their previous encounter earlier this season, and will hope to replicate their success this weekend.

Meanwhile, league leaders Matlock Town will be hoping for a neutral result in Derbyshire and also three points as they take on Lancaster City who sit in 11th place.

The Gladiators are currently on a five-game unbeaten streak however, they only possess a three point advantage over the Mariners in second place.

While Buxton may have their sights set on a title charge, they should also be wary of the chasing pack of Bamber Bridge and Scarborough, who both sit on 48 points, just one behind the Bucks, as well as Whitby Town who are currently two points behind Buxton.

The Brig travel to Manchester as they do battle against Ashton United - who’s three-game unbeaten run has seen them pull away from the relegation battle at the bottom of the league.

Conversely, Scarborough will host Hyde United who sit in 18th place, four points above Nantwich.

The Seadogs will be disappointed that they missed out on a crucial three points last weekend as Callum Saunders’ brace meant that 19th placed Witton Albion came away with a point.

Whitby, who sit just outside of the play-off spaces on 47 points, will face-off against Stafford Rangers.

Elsewhere in the league, Warrington Town welcome bottom of the league Grantham Town. The Yellows have recently dropped out of the play-off places after only coming away with two points from their last three fixtures.

FC United will be aiming to put pressure on Warrington, as they currently sit two points behind the Yellows.

They will host Witton Albion, who will be reinvigorated in their battle to survive after claiming a crucial point against Scarborough last weekend.

Towards the middle of the table, Morpeth Town will greet Nantwich Town who sit on the brink of dropping into a relegation spot, while Atherton Collieries host Gainsborough Trinity, who have only won one of their last seven fixtures.

Basford United will journey to Greater Manchester to face Radcliffe in a 13th versus 14th placed clash.

Mickleover will be hoping for all three points against Stalybridge Celtic as they try to distance themselves further from the basement of the league.
